Pseudomorphisms

From a tangled network of sensations, the brain constructs meaning using systems like mental modeling, mapping, sensation, visualization, and pattern recognition. Diagrams are thought to be a way of representing and communicating these intangible mental processes. From a map of the world, to step-by-step instructions, the visual structure of diagrams play an essential role in  learning and passing on knowledge and ideas. Most often held as devices of objectivity, through scrutiny I am uncovering the diagram as shaped by the histories, influences, and biases of its creator and social context. These pieces represent the unique ways that we understand and imagine the world around us, simultaneously exploring the authority that diagrams themselves hold over that same understanding. Through the medium of textile, I bring these images off of paper and screens, drawing parallels to the sensory world through evidence of cutting, joining, folding, assembling, warping, and interaction with light and three dimensional space. With blank canvas, exposed seams, fraying edges, and the suggestion of a painted image, the works unfolds the space between conception and finality.
